An inspiring panel on the ways philanthropy and movement can build power amidst the current political climate. This session will highlight the current attacks on movement groups, frontline activists, and foundations and the actionable steps we can take to protect our movements, despite the challenging environment.
This panel is co-organized with CS Fund and Climate Justice Alliance.
Panel #2 – Just Returns Research Panel
Friday, April 25th, 12:30 – 1:30 PM
Location: Women’s Building, 3543 18th St #8, San Francisco, CA 94110
RSVP here.
This panel will explore why philanthropic action hasn’t kept pace with the urgency of climate change despite communities having viable solutions ready for implementation. The Just Returns Project research initiative investigates this disconnect and highlights how philanthropy can better align with and accelerate community-based climate solutions. This project was created with our partners from the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy (NCRP) and the Tishman Environment and Design Center at The New School (TEDC).
Beyond Greenwashing: Centering Justice and Real Climate Action
Much of mainstream climate work has devolved into prioritizing corporate greenwashing and flashy presentations over real action. Instead of addressing the urgency of the climate crisis, Big Green NGOs, politicians and businesses promote new investment funds, too-good-to-be-true techno-scams, and hollow green pledges, with major green sponsors tied to some of the world’s most destructive companies. This corporate-driven approach is harmful to our communities.
In contrast, we center frontline communities—those hit first and worst by climate impacts. We push for transformative solutions rooted in justice, equity, and community power, not in corporate profits. Real climate action is driven by grassroots movements and local victories, not just by big summits.
