Solidarity to Solutions

Introduction

In September 2018, The Climate Justice Alliance, Grassroots Global Justice, Indigenous Environmental Network and Right to the City (under the It Takes Roots Alliance) came together in San Francisco, California to challenge the  market based Global Climate Action Summit (GCAS) hosted by California Governor Jerry Brown.  At the Summit global business leaders, public officials and international influencers came together in a forum where market-based schemes were promoted as the ONLY viable response to climate change, effectively turning it into a trade show for those who are able to profit off of climate disasters, climate change and the resulting harm brought to our communities from it. We know, however, that continuing down this path will only lead to greater devastation for our communities.

In response, the It Takes Roots Solidarity to Solutions Week was held simultaneously and spotlighted frontline community solutions to the interlinked economic, democratic and climate crises currently threatening humanity. Frontline community leaders from the Bay Area, across the U.S. and around the world mobilized, marched and shared place-based solutions that serve to decarbonize, detoxify, demilitarize and democratize our economy through critical strategies such as renewable energy like wind and solar, Indigenous land rights, food sovereignty, zero waste, public transportation, ecosystem restoration, universal healthcare, worker rights, housing rights, racial and gender justice, and economic relocalization.  We also directly challenged climate capitalists and their surrogates during the GCAS by ensuring they understood that we will not allow them to trade our future.
